How Invisalign Works

Conventional Braces are a Thing of the Past

Malocclusion or misalignment of teeth is one of the most common dental issues that affect people the world over. Metal braces have been around for quite some time as a solution to malocclusion. However, they have certain drawbacks especially during the tenure that they are worn. If some of these drawbacks have been the reason you have preferred to stick with your malocclusion, if you fear that the unsightly appearance of heavy metal braces will keep you from smiling and compromise your personality and lifestyle, here is the good news: Invisalign is the solution. It is an alternative to conventional orthodontic bracket and wire braces. It is proven to be equally effective in adults and teenagers with fully erupted permanent dentition. It is a removable orthodontic appliance which straightens teeth by incremental teeth movements. Teeth adjustment is achieved by a series of invisible, transparent, plastic aligners which have aesthetic benefits when compared to traditional braces and they do not give the “mouth full of metal” feeling.

Invisalign is the Latest Treatment Technique

Invisalign is considered one of the latest treatment techniques in dentistry, which enables you to achieve a beautiful, attractive smile without anyone noticing that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. The treatment process involves taking an impression of the patient’s teeth and scanning them to get a 3-dimensional computerized model. A software application is then used to show how teeth should be moved in increments between the current and the desired positions. This 3D computer projection is used as a basis for developing custom-made aligners using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques.

Invisalign Aligners are Safe and Easy to Use

The aligners are made of clear, nontoxic, medical grade thermoplastic material. The number of aligners required varies from person to person. On an average, 20 to 40 aligners may be needed depending on the individual needs and the degree of malocclusion. These aligners are designed to bring about movement of 0.25 to 0.33 millimeters.

They should be worn for 20 hours a day in order to achieve accurate and fast results. Each aligner is replaced with the next one in the series after 2 to 3 weeks. Most of the patients complete their treatment in 12 months. However, the average time taken by aligners to adjust teeth is 13 to 14 months.

Unlike traditional braces, you have the liberty to remove these invisible aligners as instructed by your orthodontist. They are removed when eating, brushing and flossing. Most dentists recommend avoiding meals, gums, drinks and snacks with the aligners on. Of course, you can always have a glass of water. Smoking with the aligners on is not a good idea as it can stain your aligners and compromise the success of the treatment.

Once Dr Le determines that Invisalign is right for you, we will develop a professional treatment plan, after which your aligners will all be ordered to be custom-made.

  1. You meet with an Dr. Le for a consultation about your treatment – During the initial consultation, Dr Le will talk with you about any issues you have with your teeth and explore the kind of results you’d like to achieve. If Invisalign is a good choice for you, a treatment plan will be made up with your goals in mind. Dr. Le will take impressions of your teeth and will send these to the Invisalign laboratories.
  2. Based on your scheduled plan and your dental records, a computer generated 3D treatment plan is generated that shows you the proper movement of your teeth from their current position to the ideal position. Your teeth impressions will be digitised in order for Dr. Le to review a computerised 3D image of your teeth. We will then prescribe and review the exact tooth movements for the duration of your personal treatment plan. You’ll be able to see a virtual representation of your teeth before, during, and after the Invisalign treatment, so you can see what your smile is expected to look like once you’ve finished the treatment.
  3. Once you and Dr. Le have agreed on a plan, the aligners are fabricated to custom-fit your own teeth impressions.  The aligners are custom-made for you and have to be worn for about two weeks before you using the next aligner in the series. While the number of aligners is different for everyone, a full treatment usually includes 18-36 aligners for both the upper and lower teeth, which will take approximately 9-18 months depending on your personal situation, own treatment plan and prescription.
  4. You wear aligners day and night for 20-22 hours everyday, except to eat, brush, or for special times. – in order to finish your treatment in the amount of time you and Dr Le agreed upon. Checkups are done every 4-6 weeks to monitor your progress and to get  your next series of aligners. During the entire treatment process, you’ll feel your teeth moving around, and they will gradually move into an even and healthy smile.
